PLEASE READ BELOW
If you are thinking about flying a drone at night in the UK, for instance, to capture media of a fireworks display, please consider the following:
- You need to be confident that you can reasonably carry out the flight safely.
- You should have a clear field of view for 500m horizontally and 120m vertically, up or down from your position, within which you can legally operate a drone.
- Ensure you present negligible risk to people, vehicles or property by remaining a minimum of 50m horizontally from them, at any height.
- Do not fly within 150m of or above any organised event that has more than 1000 people attending, or any built up, congested area.
- Night flying has additional risks as it's possible there are people, vehicles or buildings that you cannot see and thus maintain a safe distance from, do a thorough pre-site check in day time then cordon off your flying area and/or have additional personnel acting as spotters, using 2 way radios if need be, to ensure you are covering every reasonable eventuality and can respond to any potential dangers.
- Always ensure that your drone has well in excess of it's minimum number of GPS signals required for GPS aided flight, and be sure that you are competent at flying without GPS in case of failure, and that you are always fully aware of what way your drone is facing and where it is. Getting lost and disorientated while flying at night time seems to be incredibly easy, if personal testimonies seen on Youtube is anything to go by.
- Always have at least one "go-to" lit up land mark that your drones camera/video feed should never be beyond visual range of, ideally as close to your landing point as possible.
- If you have one, set up your automatic return-to-home feature at the lowest possible altitude at which it is definitely safe to set it at with regard to potential obstructions like buildings, trees, hills, etc, since while it is a useful safety feature to have, you will not be in full control of your drone as it autopilots back to you, so ensure it will not be flying uncontrolled at an altitude that civilian manned aircraft also use, or as far below it as is safe to do so.
For this flight I had a spotter with a radio who was on the shoreline south west of the display looking for boats, aircraft or any other hazards in the area, whilst also keeping a visual track on my drone like i was.
Boats were cordoned off by the organisers using a floating barrier/net system and while manned aircraft pilots should know better than to get close to a fireworks display, it's still crucial to be on the look out.
For this project I maintained a 200m proximity from the beach front, mainly to ensure I did not fly near people but also to ensure that the flight was unaffected by fireworks. The closest proximity I flew within to an exploding firework can be seen in the very last slow motion clip in this compilation, and even that is a cropped shot to make the explosion fill the screen.
To offset the distance I maintained, I recorded in 4K UHD then cropped almost all the clips so that the screen is more filled with scenery and the explosions seem larger on screen.
I took off and landed from a friends field on the eastern hill beside Rosemarkie, using a 2ft x 2ft homemade luminous coloured landing pad surrounded by LED lights, just in case for any highly unlikely reason I was unable to see my drone and had to use FPV for navigation.
